In The Clearing Stands A Boxer…
January 11th, 2010
There are very few people who do not enjoy the music of Simon and Garfunkel. They are one of those rare acts (like The Beatles) who appeal to a huge and very varied audience.
The two musicians first began working together in 1957 as ‘Tom and Jerry’ and they would go on and record as Simon and Garfunkel for many years to come. They had a brief split in 1964 after the poor reception of ‘Wednesday Morning, 3am’, but reformed again in 1966. As is so often the case with singer/songwriters who work closely together; Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel would frequently have disagreements during the recording of their material.
Their songs also formed the soundtrack for Mike Nichols brilliant 1967 movie, ‘The Graduate’. The music formed a perfect backdrop for a film about relationships, sex and the coming of age. ‘The Graduate’ was very much a snapshot of the sixties and tracks such as ‘Mrs. Robinson’ and ‘The Sound of Silence’ went totally hand in hand with this.
Simon and Garfunkel were always well known for their brilliant live performances; any self-respecting music lover has seen the footage of their 1981 concert when they played in New York’s Central Park. It has to be one of the greatest gigs ever caught on film.
The music of Simon and Garfunkel is completely timeless. ‘The Boxer’, ‘Scarborough Fair/Canticle’, ‘Cecilia’, ‘Hazy Shade of Winter’, ‘Bridge over Troubled Water’ and ‘Homeward Bound’ (to mention just a few) all sound as fresh today as when they were first released. They have been covered by countless bands on countless occasions and you will find them in the record collections of both the young and old.
There will never be another Simon and Garfunkel. In a time that was innocent, idealistic and naive they wove their magic with words and guitar.
I have just updated the copy on the homepage for kerosene oil, I know that it may surprise you that I am doing some work for an oil company; but I don’t think they are as inattentive to the environment as I once presumed. Plus, I’ve sold out, I need the pay!
