Adventures in Dining
Everybody is busy. Everybody needs to eat. The question is, how can the two of these things match up with my absolute love of a cheap and cheerful meal. Where I come from, it is easy to find a friendly family run restaurant three to a street. In London, it can be a bit more tricky. In London, the cheerful family restaurant is replaced with a cheerless and greasy take away. Recently, I decided to use some human resources software to create a cross London database of all of the best tiny restaurants where you can eat for under a tenner.

My first step was to go to www.octopus-hr.co.uk to find a great online program. Then I was ready to head out onto the streets of London to find my dinner. The great thing about the software was that I could easily track who I went with, where I went and how much I spent!

I started at East Ham because this offers the epitome of cheap family dining. Lining the High Street are a variety of restaurants that offer South Indian snacks and meals. My favourite South Indian treat is the dosa. If you understand the dosa, it is a gateway to wonderful cuisine. In the South of India, they use ground rice mixed with lentils to make a batter which is turned into a variety of foods. It is steamed into scone shaped patties for idli and spread out very thinly and fried into a crispy pancake for a dosa. The masala dosa is filled with a lightly spiced potato mixture, and then served with a thin red vegetable sauce and a ground coconut chutney. It is not inherently fiery and spicy, just simply delicious. It is also cheap. A huge dosa is usually under three pounds. The eateries vary, some have full table service where a waiter will come and take your order, others you order at the counter and your food is brought to you. Either way, the experience is far more relaxing than picking up a take away and eating it at home in front of the telly. To make the experience complete have a masala tea, then head into a sweet shop and choose a selection of Indian sweets to nibble on at home. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the variety, but most are some form of sweet and creamy condensed milk, or sweetish cheese like substance. You can’t go wrong.
